After loading a saved game, you've to open the gift menu of a NPC or feed menu of an animal and select any item to get the selection wheel with the 1-5 star amounts. Now you can activate the "prepare" for items. Each time you open the wheel for an item now, you can change the amount of 1-5 stars. The new value is visible when you close and reopen the selection wheel.
