The cheats affect the unit (mate) currently under the mouse pointer in combat. Changes to health are immediately visible in the tooltip when it is reopened, but only become visible on the unit itself after the next hit it receives. Changes to movement range take effect as soon as the unit is selected again or it is its turn. Note that the cheat can be used on both player and enemy units.

This cheat works best if you activate the Prepare before a sea battle starts. If you activate it during the battle, you'll need to move or attack a unit, or select another unit, for the cheat to work properly. You'll see the effect the next time you move.
